Planning has already begun for the 2013 SENE Festival.

I was asked this weekend, during the festival, when we would begin to work on next year’s festival.  My answer was “Yesterday” because I met with our Artistic Director the day before.  We discussed what has worked so far and what improvements were needed to make our 5th festival even better.

We have discussed costs and plan to offer lower entries fees for high school students and really short films.  We are now planning our screening schedule and discussing how many films we will be able to select.  We are looking at deadline dates and art and music events.

We feel good about our 2012 Festival, but we are looking forward to improvements that will benefit our audience and attending filmmakers.

Mixed Emotions

Twice each year, the SENE Festival programmers feel a proud sense of happiness and a strong feeling of disappointment at the same time.  We first feel this when we send out acceptance and rejection letters.  We are excited for the filmmakers that will receive a happy email and second guess ourselves with many of the emails going to directors of films that were not selected.  Many of these are films are worthy of being selected, but miss out because of math.

The second time we have these mixed emotions occurs when we are ready to announce the film awards.  By Day 4 of the festival, we have gotten to know most of the attendees and have formed a friendship with many.

Each year, we stand in front of a large audience and look at all the hopeful faces and it is difficult.  We should be happy to reward a filmmaker for a well-deserved award, but sometimes we are looking at our new friends and feel a bit sad.

Many films come in 2nd place and while that may not be much of a consolation, it’s important for all the filmmakers in the room (and the programmers) to remember that they are not #2 of 5 for example (if there were 5 films in a particular genre or category), but that they are actually #2 of possibly 100 films that were submitted to us.  Most of them not selected.

In the end, all of them have won.  Their film was selected while hundreds were not.  But it is still difficult sometimes…..

4th Annual SENE Film, Music & Arts Festival begins tomorrow

I cannot believe it is Tuesday, the day before our big event.  We are scrambling to find temporary walls for hanging our art. Yesterday we learned that we lost half our floor space at our Opening Night venue.  So, that means tomorrow afternoon (only hours before we open the doors) we will design a new floor layout to handle 19 artists and their creations, possibly 4 different performance locations for our musicians and bands, and determine where the filmmaker registration table should be.

Nothing our great crew at SENE can’t handle.  5 days and nights or one long party of films, music and art.  Let the games begin!

Selected filmmakers to hear from us soon

We are getting ready to send out acceptance emails to most of our selected filmmakers.  Emails will arrive by March 1st at the very latest.  Our screening schedule is almost complete and we look forward to publishing it on our website.

There are still a few films that are being re-evaluated to see if they fit in our line-up this year.  The Selection Committee spent all day and night yesterday reviewing scores and debating the merits of each film.  I expect another round of meetings today.

Congratulations to all our submitting filmmakers.  It was a real pleasure to see your films and your hard work is evident in the results we have seen.

Film Selections Underway

The SENE Film Programmers met last night to layout the screening schedule and select films based on the scores we received from our reviewers.  Approximately 90 films have been targeted for selection and acceptance emails should be sent out within a week.

The screening schedule including the dates and times has not been finalized as start times will depend upon the length of the film programs that are now being developed.

We are targeting animated shorts for Saturday (April 14) early afternoon at the Cable Car Cinema and plan to screen experimental shorts at our Opening Night Reception at the Blackstone Valley Visitors Center on April 11th.  Most of our music videos will be featured on Thursday night, April 12th at the PVD Social Club in Providence.

There are still a large number of films that are possible selections.  These films were well received and had impressive scores, but with a limited number of screenings available, it is possible that many will miss out on being part of the 2012 SENE.  We will do our best to squeeze in as many of these worthy films as possible, but, well, you know.  Not being able to select all the qualified films is the most unpleasant part of running a film festival and it is not something we look forward to.  Maybe that is why we keep some films on a “waiting list” for as a long as possible before being forced to make a decision.  We are always hopeful that a math error will allow us to select one more film to showcase at a SENE screening.

Good luck to all entrants.

Crunch Time

All the film submissions are in and now it is time to review and compare all our entries. So far, the quality of the films has been impressive and it will be difficult to choose between those that are selected and those that miss out.

For our SENE Programming Committee, the selection process is one huge math problem. Given that we have a limited number of screenings, selections are sometimes based on run times, genres and how the film fits in with other films.

Each film receives a series of scores with some short films being seen by over 40 reviewers.  The more the merrier as the combined stats help lift some films to the top of our list.  These films are quickly selected and added to our programming board.

In general terms, the top 10% are automatic selections and the bottom 20% are not.  The middle 70% is what takes most of our time to determine which ones will be shown during the festival.  Unfortunately, math alone cannot help us since there are so many variables to consider such as language, acting, editing, lighting, audio, where to put a short zombie slasher film or where to screen a documentary about the history of marble shaping.  Each year we are not able to select films we enjoy and it usually comes down to not having enough theater time to accommodate everyone.

We wish all our submitting filmmakers the best of luck and we hope to invite  most of you to participate in our annual film, music & arts festival.  Our festival gets bigger each year and we are especially impressed with the work of this year’s visual artists.

We hope to have 90% of our selections made by March 1st.

SENE Film, Music & Arts Festival Awarded $93,000 Grant

The Southeast New England Film, Music & Arts Festival (SENE) has been awarded a $93,000 grant from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation Office on Highway Safety and the University of Rhode Island Transportation Center (URITC).  The federally-funded grant is part of the URITC’s Intervention Pilot Project and will support SENE’s new program “Stay on the SENE…live well, drive safe, be creative!”

As part of the program, SENE will sponsor 50 people to attend “Introduction to Filmmaking” classes presented by the Rhode Island Film Collaborative.  Each of five classes will make a short film on the subject of drunk driving awareness.  Alcohol behavioral experts will assist the classes in the making of their films.  The first class session will begin in late April with four additional class sessions starting between May and August.

SENE is also partnering with Breaking Branches Pictures to produce a “Behind the Scenes” documentary about the program.  SENE will screen the five short films and the documentary at a special event in September.

SENE’s Artistic Director, Philip Capobres, commented, “We are very excited about this new program and are honored to be the recipient of this grant.  We developed the ‘Stay on the SENE’ program to meet the Intervention Pilot Project’s mission, which was to develop an innovative way of engaging ‘At-Risk’ drivers in the state of Rhode Island and make them aware of the risks and consequences of DUI.”

SENE would like to thank Toni-Ann Baker of Two Sisters Productions, Christian de Rezendes and Amanda de Rezendes of Breaking Branches Pictures and Mike Ryan and Cat Hainfeld of the Rhode Island Film Collaborative for their assistance in making this program possible.
